The Neuropsychology Program and Brain Imaging Laboratory (BIL) within the Department of Psychiatry offers post-doctoral fellowships in Clinical Neuropsychology and Neuroimaging. The training model and objectives are in conformance with Houston Conference (2004-2006), APA Division 40, and APPCN guidelines for specialty training in clinical neuropsychology. The program is a member of the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPIC).
Advanced Clinical Training
Supervision is conducted by four faculty neuropsychologists, including one with ABPP/CN certification. Fellows complete one to two rotations including the Neuropsychology Service at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, and the Neuropsychology Laboratory at New Hampshire Hospital (NHH) in Concord. The primary site for all fellows is DHMC. Fellows gain clinical experience with a wide variety of patient populations from children to the elderly, including among many others ADHD, developmental disorders, TBI, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, dementia, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and brain tumor. Fellows can also gain experience in pre-surgical sodium amobarbital (Wada) evaluations and pre-surgical functional mapping using fMRI.
Research Training
The BIL conducts state-of-the art research in structural and functional neuroimaging including functional MRI studies of emotion, motor skills and cognition (with an emphasis on memory and executive functions), and diffusion tensor imaging of white matter. A variety of populations are under active investigation including Mild Cognitive Impairment, Multiple Sclerosis, TBI, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Neuropsychological studies are also being conducted with these and other populations. Studies are funded by both federal agencies and private foundations. Fellows are encouraged, and provided with mentoring, to develop manuscript and grant-writing skills.
Educational Opportunities
Fellows participate in a professional development seminar, research seminar, clinical case conferences, and attend Grand Rounds in Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, as well as other conferences (such as Neuropathology and Neuroradiology) according to interests. Seminars on brain imaging, testing issues in neuropsychology, and issues related to specific areas of research within the lab are also available.
